OREM, Utah - Cinthia Silva and Jennifer Lanting both hit double-figures in kills but the 17th-ranked University of Utah volleyball team lost 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 14-25, 18-25) to Utah Valley in its first road match of the season Friday in the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational at the Shurian Family Activity Center.
Utah (4-1) had its 13-match regular-season unbeaten streak snapped but Lanting connected for a career-high 10 kills on 19 swings with four errors for a .316 hitting percentage. Silva posted 10 kills on 22 attempts with just a pair of errors for a .364 hitting mark. As a team, Utah was outhit .250 to .236 and outblocked 10-6 for the match and was also at a 13-4 disadvantage in service errors.
"I thought Utah Valley played very well," Utah head coach Beth Launiere. "They kept the pressure on us all night. They had a few lapses, but for the most part, they played well consistently. We didn't. We were up and down. We outhit them .314 to .175 in the first set so it came to down to serving and passing.
"We had some very good individual performances," Launiere said. "But as a team, we were very up and down."
Chelsey Sandberg and Sarah Hibbert had nine kills apiece. Sandberg needed only 15 attempts with only two errors for a .467 hitting percentage. Sandberg, a West Jordan, Utah native, came up with a team-high four blocks during the match.
Junior setter Stephanie Neeley distributed a team-high 22 assists, which tied her season high, and sophomore Abby Simmons dished out 17.
Defensively, junior libero Keisha Fisher and junior opposite hitter Karolina Bartkowiak both registered double-figure performances in digs as well. Fisher had a team-high 19 digs while Bartkowiak hit double-figures for the fourth time in five matches with 11 digs.
The Utes fell behind after 4-0 Wolverine early in the first set to take a 6-2 advantage. The Wolverines extended their lead to as many as six points at 20-14 before Utah went on a furious 9-1 run to assume its first lead of the set at 23-21. Unfortunately, the Utes couldn't close out the victory as UVU took five of the last six points for a 26-24 win.
Utah outhit UVU .314 to .175 and outblocked the Wolverines 4-2 in the set. Bartkowiak and Sandberg led the way with four kills apiece. Sandberg was a perfect 4-for-4 on the attack during the set while also having four blocks. Lanting also had three kills in the set, while Fisher dug up five Wolverine attack attempts.
The Utes dropped to 1-1 when losing the first set of a match and are now 0-1 when posting a lower hitting percentage through the first five matches early this season.
Down 4-2 to start the second set, Utah went on a 4-1 spurt to tie the set at six points apiece and used a 7-2 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Utes maintained their five-point edge until the score reached 21-16 and closed out the second set by taking four of the last six points to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 win the second set.
Utah outhit UVU .444 to .185 but was outblocked 2-0. Silva converted four kills on six swings while Lanting had four as well on just five attempts for a .800 hitting percentage in the set. Sandberg added three kills as well.
The Wolverines scored four consecutive points early in the third set as the Utes fell behind 6-2. UVU built its lead up to 14-8 then extended the margin to nine points at 18-9 thanks to four unanswered points. UVU gained its largest lead of 11 points (23-12) and maintained that edge for a 25-14 win.
Utah Valley outhit Utah .441 to .188 and held a 3-0 advantage in blocks during the third set. Hibbert registered a team-high four kills during the set and Fisher came up with eight more digs.
The fourth set featured six ties. The last came at 16-16 before the Wolverines took four consecutive points and a 20-16 lead late in the fourth set en route to a 25-18 fourth-set win to clinch the match.
Silva came up with three kills on six swings to go with two digs while Simmons turned in three digs during the set. Utah was outhit .194 to .000 during the set and UVU also held a 3-2 edge in blocks.
Utah Valley (4-0) was led by a match-high 18 kills from Kayli Broadbent, who also tacked on nine digs and two blocks. Camie Manwill recorded 16 kills to go with five digs and three blocks. Allyce Jones came up with a match-high 22 digs.
The Utes conclude the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational with a pair of matches tomorrow: against Washington State at 10 a.m., and Missouri at 4:30 p.m.
