USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Utah baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Air Force with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday, winning game one 12-6 and game two 19-8.
In game one, the Utes (19-24, 6-12 MWC) scored runs in the first, second and third innings. C.J. Cron drove in the first run of the game with a double in the first inning while Nick Kuroczko singled with two runners on in the second inning to score two. Devin Walker put the Utes up 5-0 with a two-run home run in the third.
Air Force cut that lead to 5-3 with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Both teams scored in the seventh inning, as Utah pushed two across the plate on a sacrifice fly from Cron and an RBI double by Walker, while the Falcons Matt Alexander recorded an RBI single to send a runner home to put the score at 7-4.
The Utes broke away in the eighth inning, scoring five runs to take a 12-4 lead. Yagi singled with the bases loaded to bring in the first run of the inning before Kuroczko stepped up and hit Utah's second grand slam of the series, belting the homer over the right field fence.
Matt Gentry's two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning cut the score to 12-6 before Utah reliever Greg Krause got Ben Ausbun on a swinging strikeout and Jack Lupo to ground out to end the game.
Jordan Whatcott went 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs with five strikeouts for his fourth win of the year. Krause earned his third save, pitching 2.1 innings. He had three strikeouts.
Yagi was 4-for-4 with three runs scored in the first game, while Kuroczko tallied three hits with six RBI. Walker drove in three runs.
With game two tied 3-3 going into the fourth inning, the Utes scored three runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good. Cooper Blanc hit a two-run home run to left field while Michael Beltran's single sent in Kevin Hussey, who reached base with a double.
Air Force scored a run in the fourth to put the Utes lead at 6-4 before Utah broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning. Six players had hits - all singles - during the inning. The Utes added two runs in the sixth inning behind a single from Beltran to score Walker and Shimada hit a sacrifice fly to send Austin Jones across the plate for a 14-4 lead.
The Falcons had several single-run innings late in the game. Up 14-6, the Utes put the game away with a five-run eighth inning. Shimada and Cron each drove in two RBI during the inning.
Robert Chimpky, who entered the game in relief in the fourth inning, picked up his second win of the season and had three strikeouts. Starter Bryn Card pitched 3.2 innings and struck out two while Stephen Streich closed out the game, pitching 2.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Shimada was 2-for-3 with five RBI, four runs scored and a home run in the second game. Beltran was 4-for-5 and drove in four runs. Walker and Hussey also had three hits.
