Ute Offense Struggles in 8-2 Loss to Utah Valley

OREM, Utah - The Utah baseball team struggled offensively as Utah Valley defeated the Utes, 8-2, on Thursday, April 7, in Orem.
The Utes (13-15) were held to just a pair of hits on the day. The team scored both of their runs and had both hits during a wild series of plays in the second inning. Down 2-0 after UVU (10-21) scored a pair of runs in the first, Nick Kuroczko led off the inning with a single to center field. C.J. Cron stepped to the plate and hit a liner to UVU third baseman Jace Brinkerhoff. Brinkerhoff overthrew the bag at first, sending Kuroczko to third and Cron to second. However, right fielder Billy Burgess missed his cutoff target and as the ball rolled through the infield, Kuroczko scored and Cron moved to third. Cron scored when Devin Walker flied out to left field, tying the game at 2-2.
Utah Valley took the lead for good with a two-run third inning, which included an RBI double from Brinkeroff. The Wolverines also scored a pair of runs in both the fourth and eighth innings. Kirk Doxey capped the scoring with a two-run home run to right center in the eighth inning.
The Utes had several hard hits in the late innings that were hit right to defenders.
Utah starter Bryn Card went two innings, giving up four runs and earning the loss. He falls to 2-2 on the season. The Utes used five pitchers in the contest, with Tyler Andersen having the best outing. Andersen pitched the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, giving up no runs and two hits. Joe Pond, who entered in the eighth, faced two batters, striking out one.
UVU starter Brock Sargent raised his record to 2-5 on the season, pitching five innings with three strikeouts.
The Utes travel to Ogden, Utah, to face New Mexico in a three game series at Lindquist Field. The Lobos are receiving votes in the national polls.
