Utes Fall in Extra Innings to New Mexico, 5-4

OGDEN, Utah - An unearned run in the 10th inning lifted New Mexico to a 5-4 victory over Utah in Mountain West Conference action on Tuesday evening at Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah.
New Mexico took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Kevin Atkinson led off the inning with a double to left field and scored on Rafael Neda's single up the middle.
The Utes took the lead in the fourth inning with home runs from Rick Cornu and Devin Walker. Cornu hit his team-high eighth home run of the season over the center field fence. After Austin Jones singled through the left side, Walker hit a two-run shot to left field, giving Utah a 3-1 lead.
Cornu scored his second run of the game in the sixth inning. After back-to-back singles from Cornu and Nick Kuroczko, Cornu scored on a ground out, pushing the Utes lead to 4-1.
Utah starter Brian Budrow pitched eight innings. He only allowed one run on three hits through the first seven innings against the nation's top-hitting ballclub.
New Mexico scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game, 4-4. Atkinson doubled to right field with runners on second and third to score the game-tying runs.
The Utes looked to take the lead in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but all three runners were left stranded.
The Lobos scored an unearned run in the 10th inning after Ryan Honeycutt reached on an error as Max Willett, who was on third, scored on the play to win the game.
Greg Krause entered in the ninth and earned his second loss on the year.
Overall, the Utes out-hit the Lobos, 11-8. Corey Shimada and Jones went 2-for-4 for the Utes, while Cornu was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Willett, Atkinson and Neda each had a pair of hits for the Lobos. Cole White earned his second win of the year on the mound after entering in the eighth inning.
The Utes and Lobos continue their three-game series in Ogden on Friday, April 10, at 6:00 p.m.
