LAS VEGAS - Corey Shimada and Devin Walker each had three hits to lead Utah as the Ute baseball team fell to UNLV, 7-5, on Saturday afternoon.
Although UNLV took a 4-0 lead after the second inning, the Utes tied the game with a four-run third inning. Shimada led off the inning with a home run to right field. Two batters later, Rick Cornu doubled down the left field line and was following by an infield single from Nick Kuroczko. C.J. Cron sent both Cornu and Kuroczko across the plate with a double to center. Cron would score on a Walker single to left field.
UNLV put up a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI triple from Anthony Morel and the Utes re-tied the game in the top of the fifth off Austin Jones' RBI single to left field, scoring Kuroczko.
UNLV broke the tie to take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Jarred Frierson singled to center to score Rance Roundy and although the Rebels loaded the bases in the inning, Utah reliever Joe Pond got out of the jam.
The Rebels added an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Andrew Wilding started on the mound for Utah, going into the fifth inning and striking out one. Pond entered in the fifth and pitched into the sixth while Bryn Card entered the game in the sixth and went two full innings, striking out two. Bennett Askew struck out both batters he faced in the ninth inning.
The Utes out-hit UNLV, 14-12, and had no errors compared to four errors from the Rebels. Both teams left eight runners on base.
Frierson was 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Rebels while Tanner Peters earned the win on the mound. Marc Baca pitched the final four innings and earned the save.
The Utes and Rebels wrap up their three-game series on Sunday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m. PT.
