LAS VEGAS - The Utah baseball team closed out its Mountain West Conference series against UNLV with a 4-3 loss in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon.
Down 2-0 after the first inning, the Utes got on the board in the top of the fourth. After Corey Shimada led off the inning with a double to right field, he moved to third on Michael Beltran's sacrifice bunt and scored when Rick Cornu grounded out.
UNLV added a run in the bottom of the fourth before the Utes tied it at 3-3 in the fifth. Austin Jones started the rally with a home run to left field. With two outs, Devin Walker reached on an error and back-to-back singles from Kevin Hussey and Shimada sent Walker across the plate.
The Utes (13-14, 3-6 MWC) had several chances to score in the final innings after leaving six runners on base through the final four innings of the game.
UNLV (15-16, 4-5 MWC) broke through in the 10th, with Bryan Resnick scoring on a wild pitch with two outs.
"We didn't play very well," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We hit some balls hard in the later innings right at people, but we've got to come through and score runs."
Shimada, Nick Kuroczko and Tyler Yagi each had two hits for the Utes.
After giving up two runs in the first inning, starting pitcher Jordan Whatcott settled down and allowed just one more run in the next five innings. He went 6.1 innings and struck out three. Stephen Streich pitched through the ninth inning. Greg Krause, who entered in the 10th, earned the loss.
"Our pitchers kept us in the ball game," Kinneberg said. "Jordan did a nice job after the first inning and Stephen Streich did a good job getting us through the ninth, but we didn't close it down in the 10th."
Utah plays in Orem against Utah Valley on Tuesday, April 7. First pitch is 7:00 p.m.
