Cron Leads Utes in 8-5 Win over UNLV

LAS VEGAS - C.J. Cron led the Utah baseball team with a 3-for-5 performance as the Utes defeated UNLV, 8-5, in cold and windy conditions in Las Vegas on Friday, April 3.
Cron put Utah (13-12, 3-4 MWC) on the board with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. He also drove in the first run of a four-run sixth inning, giving the Utes a 7-0 lead. Nick Kuroczko led off the sixth with a double before scoring on a single from Cron. Tyler Yagi also reached base with a single to put two runners on and both scored on Kevin Hussey's single to left field. Michael Beltran also had an RBI single in the inning for the Utes.
A road win is always good to start the weekend off," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "The conditions were really tough to play in - strong winds and cold. It was a good start to the weekend.
"Brian Budrow really pitched well for six innings and the bullpen hung on. C.J. swung the bat really well tonight. His home run got us on the board and got us going. It was a big hit for us."
Although UNLV cut the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Utes added an insurance run in the ninth after Austin Jones reached on an error and Gavin Green scored on the play.
UNLV attempted a rally in the ninth after J.J. Sferra led off the inning with a single to center field that was part of a three-hit, two-run inning for the Rebels before reliever Greg Krause entered to close out the win for the Utes.
Cron, who also had a triple as part of his three hits, led Utah with four RBI. Hussey, Kuroczko and Yagi each had two hits.
Starting pitcher Brian Budrow threw six innings and struck out five, picking up his fourth win of the year. He only allowed two hits through the first five innings. Robert Chimpky and Stephen Streich also threw for Utah. Streich had three strikeouts, pitching in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
UNLV (13-16, 2-5 MWC) was led by Sferra's four hits and two RBI, while Jeff Urlaub earned the loss on the mound.
The Utes and Rebels return to the mound on Saturday, April 4, at 2:00 p.m. PT.
