LOS ANGELES - The Utah baseball team played parts of three games on the second day of competition at Loyola Marymount, splitting two games and playing part of a third that was suspended due to darkness on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Utah (1-1) fell in yesterday's postponed game in 11 innings, 8-7, before winning the first game of the doubleheader, 11-7. The Utes were down in game two to LMU (1-1), 6-1 after seven innings.
Utah started the day with a continuation of Friday's game. After the Utes tied the contest in the top of the ninth inning, the game was suspended due to darkness after the conclusion of the inning. LMU scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning, with Kyle Spraker singling down the left field line with the bases loaded to score Trevor Gee, to take game one, 8-7.
The Utes bounced back with an 11-7 win in the first game of the schedule doubleheader on the heels of a four run third inning and a five run fifth inning. In the third, designated hitter Gavin Green ripped a one-out double down the left field line. Zach Jones walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Michael Beltran loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Rick Cornu continued his strong Utah debut when he doubled down the left field line to send Zach Jones and Green across the plate. Corey Shimada continued the scoring rally with a single to right field to score both Cornu and Beltran, giving the Utes a 4-0 lead.
Utah added a run in the fourth with a double steal, with Cooper Blanc stealing second while Austin Jones swiped home.
Although the Lions cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Utah came back to score five in the fifth off of a six-hit inning. Austin Jones drove in the first run of the inning with a double to score Beltran, who led off the inning with a single. Nick Kuroczko and Zach Jones each had a two RBI single in the inning. C.J. Cron and Blanc also had hits in the inning, bringing the lead to 10-3.
After LMU scored two in the bottom of the fifth, the Utes added an insurance run in the top of the seventh after Kuroczko tripled and scored on Blanc's sacrifice fly.
The Lions made one final push towards the win in the ninth, with Spraker leading off the inning with a home run and Angelo Songco hit an RBI double before pitcher Robert Chimpky entered the game to close out the ninth for the Utes.
Jordan Whatcott earned his first win as a Ute, pitching five innings and striking out five. Greg Krause pitched three innings with one strikeout.
Every Ute in the lineup had at least one hit, while five players had two hits and four had two RBI. Austin Jones had a pair of doubles, along with Kuroczko's triple.
"We swung the bats extremely well in game two," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "It was a struggle defensively. Jordan pitched ok - we didn't have too many clean innings, which is something we need to shore up on a little bit. It was good to get the first win of the season under our belts."
In the second game of the doubleheader, LMU took a 3-0 lead before Utah scored its first run of the game in the fourth inning. Shimada tripled to right center and scored on Kuroczko's single to center field.
LMU increased its lead to 6-1 in the seventh inning after several Utah errors caused three runs to score.
Andrew Wilding pitched the first six innings with three strikeouts before Joe Pond made his Utah debut on the mound in the seventh. Pond struck out two, taking the game into the postponement.
LMU pitcher Alex Gillingham had allowed just three hits against the Utes.
"Andrew pitched really well - we were up 3-1 when he left the game," Kinneberg said. "Their pitcher really pitched well today and has done a very nice job against us. We are still in the ball game though - we made some mistakes with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give them three runs."
The game resumes at noon (PT) tomorrow, Feb. 22, before the teams play the fourth and final game of the weekend series.
