NEW YORK, N.Y. - Sophomore defender Morgan Skeen (Coto de Caza, Calif.) of the University of Utah soccer team was named to the SoccerBuzz National Elite Team of the Week, the publication announced Tuesday.
"Morgan is becoming an impactful player for us on both sides of the ball," said head coach Rich Manning. "Defensively she makes it difficult for our opponents to play and she has also been getting involved when we are on the attack. I think one of the most important things with this award is that it shows we are getting results and making positive strides. When the team is doing well it draws attention and individuals are rewarded for it."
Skeen is one of 16 players from all of Division I women's soccer to be recognized as an outstanding performer this week by SoccerBuzz. She netted the equalizer in Utah's 1-1 draw against Cal State Fullerton, scoring her second goal in a nine-day span. Her first came nine days earlier as she capped the Utes' 2-0 victory against the Aggies of Utah State.
"It is a huge honor to be included with so many great players," said Skeen. "But this is not just an individual award, it's really a team honor. My teammates gave me great passes and put me in a good position to score. I think this award shows how we have improved lately as a team and gotten some better results, with a couple of good wins and a few shutouts. It's definitely another confidence boost for our team."
An integral piece of the Utah defense, Skeen has started all 10 games at left back and has rarely stepped off the field, playing almost every minute of every game. Her efforts have contributed largely to a Ute defense that has allowed just one goal during its current four-game unbeaten streak, which included three consecutive shutouts prior to the draw against CSF.
"We have definitely become a more confident team," said Skeen. "You can see it in the way we play, especially on defense. It took a little while to learn each others' game, but I think there is a lot of confidence throughout the team now. The last two weeks we have come out and played big in some big games and I think we are starting to become the team we thought we could be from the beginning of the season."
Skeen has asserted herself offensively this season as well, with two goals and a game-winning assist to her credit. Her five points are second only to Kelly Isleib's team-leading eight.
Skeen is the second Ute to be honored during the team's current four-match unbeaten streak. Last week junior goalkeeper Emalee Rogers (Centerville, Utah) was named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Skeen is the first Utah player to earn SoccerBuzz National Elite honors since Katy Reineke was selected for the week of Oct. 16, 2007.
Skeen and the Utes are back in action this weekend as they hit the road for a pair of games before the start of conference play. They will face Washington in Seattle Friday at 8 p.m. MT, then head to Cal Poly Sunday for a 2 p.m. MT kickoff. Conference play begins Saturday, Oct. 4, as the Utes host rival BYU at 7:30 p.m. at Ute Field.
