SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team rattled off its seventh-straight win here tonight, and in doing so, assured itself no worse than a fifth-place seed in next week's Mountain West Conference Tournament. The Utes (23-24, 10-12 MWC) toppled BYU, 5-3.
It looked like it was going to be an offensive battle when Corey Shimada hit a leadoff homer in the first, and Cody Guymon followed that with a triple. Guymon scored on Dustin Hennis' single down the left field line to give Utah a brief 2-0 lead after one complete.
BYU (20-34, 8-14 MWC) rallied with two runs in the top of the second, but Utah scored a run in each the third fourth and fifth innings to capture the two-run win.
Stephen Fife got the nod on the mound. He wins his sixth game of the year in going 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. He fanned six batters, issuing two walks. Robert Chimpky came on in the eighth to record his eighth save of the year.
The hits were tied at nine each. Three Utah batters had a pair of hits as Cooper Blanc's 2-for-3, one RBI effort led the team.
The Utes took a 3-2 lead into the fourth inning when Nick Kuroczko hit a high, bouncing ball to second base. BYU didn't field it successfully, and the error allowed Blanc to score. The game-winner came in the fourth when Austin Jones hit a one-out fly ball to center field with runners on second and third. The sac fly scored Cody Guymon from third.
The Crimson and White hit two homers in the game. In addition to Shimada's first-inning home run, Kuroczko hit a solo shot in the fifth.
BYU tried to rally, scoring a run in the seventh. It also had runners on second and third with one out in the eighth. But, Chimpky came on and made a play at the plate for the second out, and he got the next player to strike out to end the inning.
Jake Wortham takes the loss on the mound for BYU. He is now 4-5 on the year.
The same two teams battle here again tomorrow night. First pitch at Franklin Covey Field is set for 6 p.m.
