SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team earned its first Mountain West Conference win of the season on Friday evening with a 7-5 victory over San Diego State at Franklin Covey Field. It was also the Utes first home win of the year.
Brian Budrow earned the win on the mound for Utah, striking out five. He goes to 3-1 on the year. John James entered the game in the eighth inning. He struck out three and got his first save of the season.
"This was a good win for us, to battle back after last night" head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Brian and John pitched very well. They put us in position to win."
After San Diego State (11-10, 4-1 MWC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off three straight singles with two outs, the Utes (7-11, 1-1 MWC) used an Aztec error to their advantage to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the inning.
Corey Shimada and Michael Beltran each singled to lead off the inning. Cody Guymon grounded to the pitcher, who threw the ball away attempting to get Shimada out at third. Shimada advanced home on the play.
Austin Jones walked to load the bases before Fred Ferguson had the big hit of the inning, a double down the right field line to send all three runners on the base paths across the plate.
The Utes added runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 6-1 lead. DC Legg, who reached base in each inning with singles, was hit in by Cody Guymon in both innings.
SDSU cut the lead to 6-4 in the eighth inning, scoring three runs off four hits. Nick Romero had an RBI double in the inning while Cory Vaughn recorded an RBI single. Utah scored an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, with Legg sending Ferguson home with a sacrifice fly.
Legg went 3-for-3 in the game while Ferguson had three RBI. Beltran was 3-for-5 on the afternoon.
For the Aztecs, Pat Colwell was 3-for-5 on the day, while Vaughn had two RBI. Nate Solow pitched 3.2 innings, recording the loss.
Utah and San Diego State play the final game of the series on Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. at Franklin Covey Field.
