SALT LAKE CITY - San Diego State scored eight runs and tallied seven of its 12 hits in the first two innings en route the 9-3 win over the University of Utah baseball team here at Franklin Covey Field this afternoon.
It was the rubber match today as both teams came into the contest with a win each in the three-game series.
"We weren't ready to play early and got in a hole," said veteran Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg. "We didn't make the adjustments offensively to get back in the game. Stephen Streich and Geoff Wolfgramm did a nice job pitching. We just didn't come out today and I am disappointed in the way we played."
The Utes (7-12, 1-2 Mountain West) belted out nine hits on the afternoon, and four Utah hitters had two hits on the day. Nick Kuroczko was 2-for-3 with a run scored while Corey Shimada, Dustin Hennis and Austin Jones were all 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Shimada also accounted for one RBI and a run scored.
Utah hurler Andrew Wilding takes the loss, giving up five runs in the first frame of action. A hit-by-pitch and a single put two on board for Nick Romero. He belted a homer over the right field fence to race SDSU's (12-10, 5-1 MWC) lead out to 3-0. Utah got an out on the next batter after the homer, but that was followed by three straight singles and another RBI. A two-out error led to another run and the to the Aztecs' 5-0 lead.
Wilding only pitched for two-thirds of an innings, allowing five hits and five runs (four earned).
The Aztecs plated another three runs in the second inning, and Utah finally responded in the third. Shimada slammed a one-out solo homer to right field, making it 8-1.
Utah would score two more runs, this time in the sixth inning. Cody Guymon had a one-out triple, and he scored on the very next play. Hennis' single through the right side of the field plated Guymon, and trimmed the SDSU lead down to 8-2. Austin Jones reached second on an SDSU error, and he too would score on a double to left by Kuroczko's.
When the sixth inning was done, Utah trailed 8-3. But San Diego State had one more run up its sleeve, making 9-3 in the ninth inning on an RBI single.
J.R. Murphy got the nod on the mound for the visitors, and is credited with win today. Offensively, Erik Castro led the Aztecs with a 5-for-3, two-RBI outing.
