SALT LAKE CITY - San Diego State played spoiler tonight as the University of Utah baseball team lost its home opener to the Aztecs here at Franklin Covey Field, 7-2.
SDSU nearly doubled Utah's (6-11, 0-1 Mountain West) hit total, out-slugging the home team, 13-7. Five of Utah's seven hits came in the first four innings as the Utes attempted to rally from a three-run deficit. But, SDSU hurler Stephen Strasburg held Utah's bats silent down the stretch.
"We didn't meet the challenge in all three phases of the game tonight," said head coach Bill Kinneberg. "Stephen Strasburg pitched well against us, and he really shut us down."
An RBI single in the second gave the Aztecs a 1-0 lead, and back-to-back RBI singles in the third tripled the visitors' lead.
In the bottom of the third, Utah managed to cut into SDSU's lead. Corey Shimada belted a two-out triple through the right side of the field, and he would come home on the very next play. Michael Beltran singled to the right side of the field, allowing Shimada to cross home safely.
It was Beltran's 3-for-4 effort with the bat that led Utah this afternoon. He also had the lone RBI for Utah this evening.
The Aztecs recaptured their three-run lead in the top of the fourth, with yet another RBI single. But, Utah responded in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2 SDSU. Cody Guymon led the inning off with a walk, and moved to second on a walk to Dustin Hennis. Guymon scored when Austin Jones grounded into a double play.
Utah hurler Stephen Fife threw for 6.1 innings in tallying the loss. He allowed 10 hits, five earned runs and three walks. Fife whiffed three Aztec batsmen.
SDSU (11-9, 4-0 MWC) scored three more runs the rest of the way, holding Utah at bay for the five-run win.
Strasburg tallied the win for the Aztecs, and Garrett Green's 3-for-5 outing at the plate led the team's offense.
The same two teams do battle at Franklin Covey tomorrow evening. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
