FRESNO, Calif. - Gonzaga hung a seven-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth to help it rally past the University of Utah baseball team in the championship game of the Pepsi Johnny Quick Tournament this evening, 10-7.
"We made a crucial error, and we couldn't make a stop in the sixth inning," said head coach Bill Kinneberg. "Gonzaga ended up scoring seven runs before we could get an out and get control of the inning. But, it was a situation where Gonzaga hit the ball hard, over and in between us. We couldn't stop them for a while, and ultimately, it lost the game for us.
"But, I'm happy with the way the team played today, and with how they played all week. We made it to the championship game of this tournament, and I'm proud of them because of that."
The Utes (6-10 overall) owned the 12-11 edge in hits, led by the 3-for-3 effort of Fred Ferguson. Corey Shimada was 2-for-4 and Dustin Hennis was 2-for-5.
Bennett Askew, who came on for the final out of the third inning, gets the loss. He tossed for 2.1 innings, and he allowed four earned in the game. Andrew Wilding got the start for Utah, going 2.2 innings.
Utah got the scoring started with two runs in the first and a score in the second. Shimada led the game off with a walk, but made it to third thanks to a sacrifice and a long fly ball. Shimada scored on Hennis' single, and then Hennis scored on the very next play, a double by Austin Jones.
A fielding error allowed Utah to take the 3-0 lead. Shimada hit it to the first baseman, who mishandled the ball. It allowed Ferguson to score from second, giving Utah the three-run lead.
But, Gonzaga would rally in the third and fourth frames to tie it. A two-out, two-RBI single by Ryan Wiegand cut the GU deficit to one in the third. And in the fourth, with runners on second and third, Shawn Wyat hit a routine groundout to the shortstop. It allowed the runner from third to score, tying the ballgame.
Utah recaptured the three-run lead in the sixth. Back-to-back one-out doubles by Nick Kuroczko and Ferguson gave Utah a 4-3 lead. Ferguson's two-bagger scored Kuroczko. Ferguson scored on the very next play, Tyler Relf's single to centerfield. Relf scored two batters later when Cody Guymon hit a two-out single through the left side.
However, Gonzaga countered with a seven-run effort in the bottom of the sixth. The inning started with two singles and an error, loading the bases for the Bulldogs. And, they'd capitalize on it. A single, a hit batsman, and another five consecutive singles spelled doom for the Utes, who went down 10-6 after six.
A Shimada homer in the eighth trimmed the GU lead to three, and that's as close as Utah would get the rest of the way.
CJ McClure got the win for Gonzaga, and Cody Martin got the save. GU's top hitter was Grant Kveder. He was 3-for-5 on the day. But, Wiegand's 2-for-5, three-RBI effort did the most damage.
Play for Utah continues next weekend when it hosts San Diego State to open conference play.
