FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State four-hit the University of Utah baseball team as the Bulldogs tallied the 10-0 win here on the final day of round-robin play in the Pepsi Johnny Quick Tournament. Tomorrow, the six teams will be seeded and a tournament champion will be crowned.
The Utes (6-9 overall) are 3-2 for the tournament. The Crimson and White will face Gonzaga again in the championship bout tomorrow. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. (PT). The Utes lost to Gonzaga on Tuesday, 10-5.
"We're in the championship game, and that's a nice tribute to the effort we put in all week," said head coach Bill Kinneberg. "Saturday will be a chance for us to get back at Gonzaga. But, for me, it's another opportunity to improve before the San Diego State game next weekend, and that's the bottom line."
FSU held the 11-4 edge in hits as Corey Shimada led the Utes with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. The other two Utah hits came from the bats of Jesse Shriner and Michael Beltran.
"First of all, the guy who pitched against us is one of the top college pitchers in the nation," said Kinneberg. "There's no doubt in my mind that he will be drafted in one of the first two rounds when he goes pro. He pitched an outstanding game. He really handcuffed us.
"It was a good ballgame for us until the eighth inning, and then we made some mistakes. But, this was a good learning experience for us. We played a good ball club, and a good pitcher. It's the same type of play I anticipate on Friday nights in conference play."
John James got the start on the mound for Utah. He takes the loss in throwing four innings of ball. He allowed seven hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks. James struck out two Fresno State (7-9) batters.
FSU got everything it needed in the bottom of the second, as Jordan Ribera singled to score Alan Ahmady from second.
The Bulldogs kept it coming, scoring another run in the third, three in the fifth, one in the seventh and four in the eighth.
