Utah Drops Game 2 of Doubleheader

DAVIS, Calif - The University of Utah baseball team was up 4-1 after 5.5 innings, but UC Davis scored three in the sixth and three in the eighth as the Aggies rallied for the 7-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader here this afternoon.
The Utes (0-6 overall) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in third when Corey Shimada belted an RBI single and Cody Guymon hit a sac fly. Their efforts scored Fred Ferguson and DC Legg, respectively, as Utah took the two-run lead.
UCD responded with a run in the fourth, but Utah countered with two more runs in the top of the sixth. Cooper Blanc hit a shot back to the pitcher, and he couldn't handle it. His error allowed Jesse Shriner to score, and it gave Utah the 3-1 advantage. Utah took the three-run lead when Michael Beltran's single to short scored Dustin Hennis.
But, over the last four innings, UCD would out-score Utah, 6-1. A three-run sixth by UCD tied it at 4-4, and another three runs in the eighth gave the Aggies their first lead of the game, 7-4.
The Utes rallied in the ninth, and got a run when Hennis' single to right field scored Tyler Relf (who pinch-ran for Cody Guymon). Utah still had runners on the corners with only one out after it scored. But the last two batters of the game lined out and struck out as Utah's rally fell short.
Robert Chimpky got the loss in relief. He only pitched one inning, but gave up three earned runs on two hits in the eighth.
Eight Utah batters got a hit, scattering 11 offerings for the game. Leading the way was Shriner. He went 3-for-5 at the plate. Shimada was the only other Ute with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 this afternoon.
Justin Fitzgerald is the winning pitcher, tallying his first win of the season (1-0).
The same two teams will battle in the fourth and final game of the series on Sunday. First pitch at UC Davis is set for 1 p.m. (PT).
