DAVIS, Calif. - The University of Utah baseball team (0-7) scored in each of the first three innings, but it wasn't enough to keep UC Davis at bay as the Aggies rallied from a 10-3 deficit to claim the 14-13 win in the bottom of the ninth.
The Utes still led the Aggies (6-3 overall), 13-12, after 8.5 innings. But, UCD plated two runs in its last at-bat to escape with the one-run win. It was a no-out, two-run homer by Evan Hudson that doomed the Utes. Robert Chimpky, who came on to pitch in the ninth, gets the loss in relief. He falls to 0-3 on the season.
Utah belted out a season-high 13 hits in the loss. Five Utes had a multi-hit afternoon. Jesse Shriner, Austin Jones, Fred Ferguson and Michael Beltran all went 2-for-5 at the plate today. Jones led the way with a homer and four RBI.
Utah plated 10 runs in the first three, buoyed by an eight-run first frame.
The Utes jumped all over UCD in the first, tallying eight runs on seven hits. Corey Shimada's double led it all off, and he advanced to third on Cody Guymon's single. Shriner's single scored Shimada, and Dustin Hennis walked to load the bases. Jones then belted a two-RBI single to center, scoring Shriner and Guymon.
UCD retired the next two batters, but Beltran hit an infield single to plate Hennis. The last four runs came from DC Legg and Guymon. Legg hit a two-run single to score Beltran and Jones. Then Guymon hit a two-RBI double to make it 8-0. Shimada and Legg crossed home on Guymon's two-bagger.
The Aggies scored two runs in the bottom of the first but Utah countered with runs in each the second and third innings. A Ferguson RBI single in the second and Shriner's RBI single in the third made it 10-2.
However, the Aggies would start to rally, pecking away at Utah's lead. They plated a run in the third and three in the fifth, and were only down by a 10-6 count after five.
Jones's homer in the sixth scored two runs, giving Utah a 12-6 lead, but UCD scored six times in the bottom of the sixth to tie it, 12-12. Two two-RBI double's and a pair of RBI singles by UCD knotted the score after six frames.
The teeter-totter went back the way of Utah in the top of the ninth. The Utes had runners on the corners with no outs, and Beltran singled up the middle to score Cooper Blanc. The Utes led, 13-14, with three outs left in the game.
Hudson finished the game with his two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.
Bryan Evans gets the win in relief for UC Davis.
Utah returns to action on March 6-8 when it plays a three-game series at Southern Utah.
