Baseball Stumbles in First Game of Doubleheader

DAVIS, Calif. - The bottom three batters tallied six of the team's 12 hits today, but it wasn't enough for the University of Utah baseball team as it dropped its fifth straight game with a 13-5 loss to UC Davis here in the first game of a doubleheader.
Freshman Michael Beltran led the Utes (0-5 overall) as he had the first three-hit game of his career. He went 3-for-4 at the plate. But, it was Austin Jones who provided the punch in Utah's offense today. Although Jones was only 1-for-4 at the plate, he accounted for three of the team's five RBI. Jones hit a three-run homer in the eighth, scoring Jesse Shriner and Cody Guymon.
It was another slow start that doomed the Utes, who spotted UC Davis (4-3 overall) a 9-run lead. The Aggies plated a single run in the second, and exploded for seven runs in the third. UCD plated another run in the fourth before Utah finally responded with its first score in the sixth.
Shriner hit his second homer of the year, a one-out solo shot in the sixth, to trim Utah's deficit to 9-1. However, the Aggies responded with another three runs in the bottom of the sixth. It was Kevin James who belted a three-run homer to up UCD's lead to 12-1.
Utah would score the next four runs, plating a score in the seventh and three in the eighth.
A Fred Ferguson solo homer in the seventh made it 12-2, and Jones' three-run shot in the eighth made it 12-5.
That was as close as Utah would get, as it surrendered one last run to the home team in the bottom of the eighth.
Utah's Brian Budrow got the start and the loss in the first game of the twin bill. He tossed 2.2 innings, and he gave up seven hits and eight runs. Only two of the runs given up were earned, though. He also struck out two batters. Budrow falls to 0-1 on the season.
Brad McAtee (2-0) gets the win for the Aggies.
