BOZEMAN, Mont. - The University of Utah Cross Country team finished fourth of 13 teams at the Montana State Invitational this afternoon. The Utes fourth-place finish was led by freshman Lauren Lewis who finished sixth in clocking the three-mile course in 17:28.00.
In all the Utes scored a total of 83 points with the top-five runners within 30 seconds of each other. Trailing Lewis in the race were: Rebecca Mackelprang in 17th (17:45); Kellie Anderson in 19th (17:47); Alyssa Abbott in 21st (17:53); and Janett Ern in 24th (17:58).
Also racing for the Utes today were Stephanie Skoreyko (43rd, 18:31), Lauren Endersen (44th in 18:32), and Alexis Davis (56th, 19:15). University of Montana placed second (73 points), followed by Weber State (78), University of Utah (83), Utah Valley University (112), University of Wyoming (124), Montana State University (163), Idaho State University (245), MSU- Billings (284), Carroll College (309), University of Great Falls (314), Westminster (352), and Rocky Mountain College (390).
Last year at the Montana State Invitational the Utes only had one athlete finish under 18 minutes on the same course and this year they have stepped it up with 5 athletes finishing under 18 minutes.
"It was a perfect day to run," says head coach Kyle Kepler. "We ran very well as a group and as a team, and we have a great chance to be a top-ten team on the region.
Kepler ends with, "The effort and intensity are there so our next few weeks we will focus on getting our two through five runners closer to the leader which will allow us to place higher in our meets."
