SALT LAKE CITY--The University of Utah softball team (25-24-1, 5-12 Mountain West) split its doubleheader with San Diego State here this afternoon. After dropping game one, 2-1, the Utes rallied to win game two, 7-2.
"It was disappointing that we didn't play better in game one, and that we let it slip away from us," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "But, our execution, our focus and our intensity was where it should be in game two and we need to take that into the final two games against UNLV here this weekend."
Staci Hemingway's bat was on fire as she went 5-for-7 over the two games this afternoon. Those numbers included a 4-for-4, three-RBI, three-run effort in the 7-2 game-two win. Hemingway also hit her eighth homer of the year, a two-run shot in the sixth inning of game two.
Hurlers Karina Cannon and Meghan Dyer each got a start today. Cannon (7-10) took the hard-luck loss in game one while Dyer (17-10) hurled the Utes victory in the nightcap. Cannon allowed eight hits and two earned runs. Dyer scattered three hits and had two earned scores
Utah returns to Ute Field tomorrow afternoon. It hosts UNLV at 4 p.m.
San Diego State 2, Utah 1 - Game 1
The Utes struck first in game one, taking 1-0 lead into the fifth inning.
A costly SDSU error in the fourth gave Utah the 1-0 lead. Andrea Hoffman lined out to the pitcher with runners on the corners. But, Aztec pitcher Christina Ross threw it away trying to pick off the runner at first base. The throwing error allowed Diana Phillips to score from third.
The Aztecs rallied with two runs in the fifth. An RBI single and a sacrifice fly to left field plated the two runs for the visitors.
Cannon took the loss in game one while Ross is the winning pitcher. She ups her season mark o 22-12.
San Diego State 2, Utah 7 - Game 2
The Utes roared back in game two, pounding out 13 hits in scoring seven runs. Leading the way was Hemingway's 4-for-4 effort at the plate.
The Utes plated two runs in the first inning and three in the second. A bases-loaded walk to Andrea Hoffman scored Meghan Crouse to make 1-0. Kara Foster's RBI single to left with the bases juiced scored Hemingway to make it 2-0.
SDSU responded in the top of the second with two runs of its own, both on suicide squeeze plays. But, Utah plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-2.
Utah scored two of the runs on suicide squeeze plays too. Hemingway and Hailey Davenport each laid down suicide squeeze plays to make it 4-2 while Hoffman hit an infield grounder to the shortstop, allowing Hemingway to score.
Hemingway's sixth inning homer bumped the score up to the final of 7-2.
Dyer picked up the win while SDSU pitcher Melissa Owens (9-9) is saddled with the loss. Three different Aztec batters had a hit in game two.
