The University of Utah women's soccer team opens Mountain West Conference play this week, with a pair of tough contests right out of the gate.
The Utes will be in Las Vegas Thursday afternoon for a contest with the UNLV Rebels. Saturday night, Utah will travel to Provo for a Deseret First Duel rivalry series matchup at BYU.
The Utes, Cougars and Rebels were chosen as the preseason top three in the MWC.
Utah is 8-2-2 all-time against UNLV. The Utes are 3-1-0 against the Rebels in Las Vegas. Utah is 4-13-1 all-time versus BYU. However, the Utes won last year's matchup and played to a 1-1 tie in 2005. The Utes are 2-5-1 against BYU in Provo.
Opening Kick
Utah is easily the highest-scoring team in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes are averaging 2.50 goals per game. This week's opponents BYU (1.17 gpg) and UNLV (1.08 gpg) rank fifth and sixth in the league, respectively.
Conversely, Utah is No. 6 in the MWC in goals allowed per game (1.33), while BYU is No. 1 at 0.25 and UNLV is No. 2 at 0.67.
Lethal Letro
Junior Adele Letro (Davis, Calif.) sat out last week's game at Utah Valley and scored the first goal in Utah's 2-0 win over Utah State. She has now scored 13 times in 11 games. Letro ranks No. 1 in the MWC and No. 2 in NCAA Division I in goals per game (1.18).
Letro also has three assists, giving her 29 total points for an average of 2.64 points per game, which ranks No. 1 in the MWC and No. 2 in the nation.
Letro has scored in nearly one-half (25-of 53) of her collegiate games. She now has seven career multi-goal games and 17 career game-winning goals.
Isleib = Assist
Utah sophomore Kelly Isleib (Park City, Utah) is the national leader in assists per game. The Ute midfielder is tied with Portland's Michelle Enyeart for the top spot in Division I with 1.0 per contest.
Isleib has recorded assists in seven of Utah's 10 games this season. She has dished out two assists in three contests.
Isleib's remained at 1.0 per game through this week. She did not play last week while recovering from a minor knee injury, but is expected to be able to go this week.
Reineke Under Radar
Utah junior Katy Reineke (Salt Lake City) has quietly become one of the top scorers in the Mountain West Conference and the nation this season.
How can she do that quietly? She's stayed under the radar, largely due to the high national ranking in scoring of her teammate Adele Letro.
But Reineke has eight goals, averaging 0.67 per game. That ranks her No. 4 in the conference and No. 37 in the nation. Reineke has three assists to go with her eight goals, giving her 19 points on the season.
