SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's volleyball team lost to its fourth ranked opponent of the season, 3-1, against No. 22 New Mexico State, on Crimson Court on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
The Utes were led by Whitney Webb's 14 kills and four blocks. Kathryn Haynie recorded 11 kills and 10 digs while Lori Baird had 10 kills, two aces and seven blocks. Keisha Fisher tallied 22 assists and 12 digs.
After struggling in games one and two, falling 30-21 and 30-23, respectively, the Utes bounced back to win game three, 30-23. Up 15-14, Utah went on a 4-0 run, led by kills from Haynie and Baird, to take control of the game, 19-14. The Utes would pull away from there, winning 30-23. Whitney Webb tallied six kills to lead Utah in the third game, while Haynie had three kills and six digs.
With the Utes down 11-10 in game four, NMSU went on a 4-0 run that allowed it to take the lead for good while continuing to pull away. Although the Aggies would lead by as many as 10 points in the final game, Utah rallied at the end to come within seven points before falling 30-23.
"This match was a step backwards for us," head coach Beth Launiere said. "We've made improvements every match this season and this is our first step back. We worked hard, but were just too inconsistent. I believe we can fix that, but it's disappointing. We need to look forward. The great thing about athletics is that we get another chance, and we get another chance this Friday night."
Other strong performers for Utah included Karolina Bartkowiak, who recorded eight kills and six blocks in the match. Stephanie Shardlow had 24 assists and nine digs.
For New Mexico State, Krista Altermatt led the way with 18 kills and 10 digs on the night. Krystal Torres had 26 digs and three aces while Kim Oguh had 12 kills, five blocks and three aces. Alyssa Gintant tallied 33 assists.
Utah continues at home this weekend, returning to Mountain West Conference action on Friday, Oct. 5 against New Mexico, and Saturday, Oct. 6, vs. TCU.
