SALT LAKE CITY - Brigham Young University used an eight-run sixth inning to defeat the University of Utah baseball team Friday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. The Cougars used that outburst as a springboard to a 14-7 Mountain West Conference victory.
Utah jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three innings, as starting pitcher Lucas Trinnaman cruised for the first five innings. BYU scored a single run in the top of the third off Trinnaman, but the Utes answered in the bottom of the frame.
Back-to-back walks from Adam Frank and Corey Shimada led off the inning. Ryan Khoury followed with a single to center, loading the bases. Bret Baldwin then laced a single to center, pushing Frank and Shimada across the plate to give Utah a 2-1 lead. Jay Brossman chased home Khoury with an RBI fielders choice. After stealing second base, Brossman scored on a John Welsh single up the middle, giving the Utes their three-run edge.
Neither team scored again until the top of the sixth. BYU's Ben Saylor struck out to open the inning. But Jeff Hiestand hammered a mammoth solo home run to deep right field, pulling the Cougars within two, 4-2. A walk to Kasey Ko and an RBI double off the bat of Kent Walton made it 4-3. Trinnaman's next pitch hit Blake Crosby. That ended Trinnaman's day.
Ute reliever Greg Krause came on in relief of Trinnaman and promptly gave up six straight hits. Those six consecutive base hits led to five more BYU runs. By the time the carnage ended, the Cougars had scored eight runs on eight hits in the inning, grabbing a 9-4 lead.
The Cougars added two more off Krause and Brian Hedman in the seventh to grab an 11-4 advantage. Both teams scored once in the eighth, to make it 12-5. Both squads also scored a pair of runs in the ninth, accounting for the final tally.
Jesse Craig (7-6) took the win for BYU, going six innings and allowing four runs on six hits. Trinnaman (3-4) was the hard-luck loser for Utah. He allowed just five hits through 5 1/3 innings. He was charged with five runs, when Krause allowed his two inherited runners to score in the sixth.
Marcos Villezcas and Crosby each had three hits for BYU, which totaled 19 hits in the game. Welsh led Utah at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI. Brossman was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
The Utes and Cougars will wrap up their three-game series Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Franklin Covey.
