Utah Drops Final Game of UVSC Series, 5-4

OREM, Utah -- The University of Utah baseball team scored 41 runs, winning the first three games of its series with Utah Valley State earlier this week. The Utes managed just four runs Saturday and dropped a 5-4 decision to the Wolverines.
UVSC (10-24) got on the board in the second inning, when Canyon Vance homered to left field off Utah starter Lucas Trinnaman.
Utah took a 2-1 edge, its only lead of the game, in the fop of the fifth. Catcher Josh Bell walked and later scored on an error by the UVSC left fielder after a Ryan Khoury single. Khoury later came around on a Clayne Garrett groundout to give the Utes a one-run edge.
The lead didn't last long. UVSC used a walk, two hits, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth. The three-spot gave the Wolverines a 4-2 lead.
The Utes pulled within one in top of the sixth. Right fielder Joe Mozeleski reached on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundout. Left fielder Corey Shimada pushed Mozeleski across to make it 4-3 with a single up the middle
The Utes tied the contest 4-4 in the top of the eighth. Center fielder John Welsh, singled and moved to third on a double off the bat of third baseman Erich Kemp. Welsh scored when Bell lined a sacrifice fly to center field.
But UVSC answered in the bottom half of the frame. The Wolverines got an Eli Slesk single and a stolen base. Slesk scored the eventual game-winning run when Jake Openshaw singled to right field, putting Utah Valley on top 5-4.
The Utes went in order in the ninth.
Brad DeVore (3-2) suffered the loss in relief for Utah. He tossed one inning, allowing the single run in the bottom of the eighth. Kyle Beecher (1-1) allowed just one run on two hits in three innings of relief work for UVSC, taking the win.
