SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team struggled to figure out UNLV starter Kevin Skogley Saturday afternoon. Skogley shut the Utes down for seven innings, leading his Rebels to a 12-5 win in a Mountain West Conference game at Franklin Covey Field.
Skogley allowed two runs in the bottom of the second. Utah center fielder John Welsh walked, followed by a double off the bat of third baseman Erich Kemp. Welsh scored on a sacrifice fly from right fielder Joe Mozeleski. Kemp then came around on a Rebel error to give Utah (22-19, 5-7 MWC) a 2-0 lead.
But that's all Skogley (2-6) would allow. The Rebel hurler went seven strong innings, scattering three hits to pick up the victory. Skogley struck out eight Utes, while allowing just one base on balls.
The UNLV offense tied the contest 2-2 in the top of the fourth. The Rebels put runners at first and third with one out in the fifth, knocking King out of the game. Utah reliever Rory James couldn't get out of the jam, however. James walked the bases loaded and then gave up a two-run single to the Rebels' Chris Bonnell. An infield single drove in another run and UNLV (18-26, 5-10) led 5-2.
The Rebels added two more in the sixth on a long, two-run home run by Chad Miller. UNLV scored three unearned runs in the eighth off another Ute reliever Brian Lane. The big blow was a two-run home run off the bat of Braden Walker. The Rebels led 10-2 after eight innings. UNLV added two more in the ninth off Brian Hedman to make it 12-2.
The Utes finally got some offense going in the bottom of the ninth, but it was much too little and much too late. Utah scored three runs on five hits off UNLV reliever Koji Pupo to account for the final seven-run differential.
King (3-6) suffered the loss for Utah, although none of the Ute hurlers were particularly effective. No Ute batter had more than one hit for the day. Offensively, UNLV was paced by Miller, who was 3-for-4 with five RBIs and a run scored.
The rubber game of the series will be played Sunday at Franklin Covey Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
