SALT LAKE CITY - Utah's ninth inning rally fell short as the Utes dropped their 2006 home opener 10-8 to Portland on Friday afternoon at Cate Field on the Salt Lake Community College campus.
Utah fell to 8-9 on the season while Portland improved to 4-12.
Senior right-hander Josh Cooper dropped his record to 2-2 with the loss, giving up six runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. He was also hurt by two errors, giving up four unearned runs while striking out four and walking two.
Ryan Khoury led the Utes at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored and two RBI. Brett Baldwin and Erich Kemp both had a pair of hits.
Leading 2-1, Portland broke the game open with four runs in the third inning, chasing Cooper from the game in the process. Nik Kosach doubled and scored on a passed ball. Cory Wiltshire swung at strike three but Adam Frank couldn't keep the ball in front of him, allowing Kosach to cross the plate for a run and Wiltshire move on to first.
Jesse Rodgers reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a walk to Chase Powell four batters later. Andrew Wrisley then delivered the big blow with a single that drove in Travis Vetters and Wiltshire to put the Pilot ahead 6-1.
Chase Christensen then came on to relive Copper, getting the final out of the inning.
Christensen was solid in 3 and 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on one hit while recording four strikeouts. He held Portland scoreless until the seventh inning, allowing Utah to work its way back into the game.
The Utes got a pair of runs in the third inning. Khoury had a leadoff walk and Baldwin followed with a double. Jay Brossman then singled Khoury home and Baldwin scored on a fielder's choice to make it 6-3.
Khoury led-off the seventh inning with a single and scored when the Pilots couldn't turn a double play on a ball hit by Scott Malone back up the middle and fielded by the pitcher. Portland led at that point 7-4.
Khoury was credited for driving in two runs in the eighth, bringing the Utes back within a run. With Erich Kemp and Mozeleski aboard with a double and a walk, respectively, Mike Tummolo singled to load the bases. Khoury then hit a ground ball that forced Tummolo out at second. However, Khoury beat the throw to first, preventing an inning-ending double play. When Powell threw home to gun down Mozeleski, who was racing down the line, Chase Crowder couldn't keep the ball in front of him as it caromed off the dirt in front of the plate.
The Pilots scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 10-6 lead, but the Utes wouldn't go away easily.
Malone led off with a single, followed by another single from John Welsh. Mozeleski then delivered a one-out single to drive in Kmetko, who was running for Malone. Pitch hitter Eric King brought in Welsh ground ball back to pitcher Austin Dirkx, whose only play was at first. Tummolo flew out to right field to end the game.
Utah continues its five-game homestand at Cate Field with two more games against Portland. The Utes and Pilots are scheduled to play both Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
