SALT LAKE CITY - Inclement weather has forced the cancellation of Sunday's college baseball action between the University of Utah and the University of Portland. Sunday's bad weather makes Saturday's suspended game an 8-1 win for Portland in six innings. Sunday's game at SLCC's Cate Field has been cancelled.
In Saturday's contest, each team managed to push a run across in the first inning. Portland took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Sean Nicol walked and later scored on a Jesse Rodgers double. The Utes tied it 1-1 in the bottom half of the first frame. Ryan Khoury walked and later scored on a Jay Brossman single.
But that's the last run Utah would be able to manage. Portland scored two in the second off Ute starter Eric King in the second inning. The Pilots' Danny Meier hit a two-run home run to put his team on top 3-1. Portland used back-to-back base hits in the third to knock King from the ballgame.
Utah reliever Brian Hedman got the Utes out of the third-inning jam and retired Portland in order in the fourth inning. Meanwhile, the Utah offense was struggling. The Utes didn't advance a runner past second base against Pilot starter Sean Sargent after the first inning.
Hedman ran into some trouble in the fifth, hitting a batter and issuing a walk. Brian Lane took over on the mound and allowed three consecutive doubles as Portland increased its advantage to 7-1. The Pilots strung together three singles and scored a single run in the sixth to lead 8-1.
Portland was batting in the top of the seventh when the umpires deemed the conditions unplayable. Play was to be resumed Sunday, but snow on the field forced the cancellation of Sunday's action.
Sargent (2-3) takes the win for Portland, striking out nine in six innings, while allowing just one run on nine hits. King (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs in two innings of work.
Khoury led the Utah offense, reaching base in all three plate appearances. He doubled, walked twice and scored the Utes' only run of the game. Meier was the top hitter for Portland, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs.
Utah is slated to host New Mexico State in a two-game series at SLCC's Cate Field Monday and Tuesday.
