TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Utah softball team tallied its eighth straight win with a 4-3 extra-inning victory over Bradley at the Sunshine State Tournament this morning. With the victory, Utah is 3-0 in the tournament and wins Pool D.
It will face the second-place team from Pool A (Florida State, Connecticut, Kent State or Western Illinois) at 4 p.m. (MST).
In a nail-bitter, Utah (11-5) rallied in its last at-bat in the eighth inning to secure the victory.
Down 3-2 in the eighth and with Diana Phillips placed on second (international tie-breaker rule), Jessica Shiery, the game-winning run, led off the inning by reaching on an error. A passed ball allowed the runners to advance to second and third and Devina Quintero's double down the left-field line lifted the Utes to the one-run victory.
Karina Cannon went all eight innings for the Utes and gets the win. She improves to 5-1 on the year. Cannon struck out seven and allowed only one walk and six hits. None of the three Bradley runs were earned.
Jackie Wong and Shiery led the Utes at the plate as they were both 2-for-4. Wong also scored a run while Shirey scored a run and tallied two RBI.
Utah spotted the Braves a two-run lead. In the fourth inning, Bradley pounced on a pair of errors by shortstop Sharee Fonoti, scoring two unearned runs to capture the lead.
A bases-loaded double in the fifth for Utah tied the game at 2-2. With two out and the bases juiced, Shiery hit a double to left field. Her clutch hit allowed both Wong and Meghan Crouse to score, effectively tying the game.
The Braves were able to take a brief, one-run lead in the top of the eighth. They moved Stephanie Ramsey from second to third and Elizabeth Wilson scored Ramsey on a two-out RBI single to third.
Brittany Dehler takes the loss for Bradley as she falls to 4-1 on the year. She struck out five and allowed one walk and six hits in the losing effort.
