COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Utah baseball team saw its bullpen allow runs in each of the last four innings Sunday afternoon. Those relief pitching problems led to a 6-5 win for UNC Greensboro over the Utes at the Domino's Aggie Baseball Classic.
Utah (5-7) jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind solid pitching from Lucas Trinnaman (Jr., Alpine, Utah). The Utes got on the board in the third inning, when second baseman Tyler Kmetko (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) doubled with two outs and scored on a Breeze Stringham (Jr., Provo, Utah) single.
Utah increased its advantage in the fourth. Erich Kemp (Jr., Hemet, Calif.) and Joe Mozeleski (Sr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. A walk to left fielder Mike Tummolo (Sr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) loaded the bases. Shortstop Ryan Khoury (Sr., West Jordan, Utah) then delivered a two-run single to give Trinnaman a three-run lead.
Trinnaman left the game after five innings, holding UNC Greensboro (2-5) scoreless for that span. He allowed just three Spartan hits, while striking out six and walking four. Greg Krause (Fr., Henderson, Nev.) came on in the sixth for Utah. Krause promptly walked two batters and allowed a two-run double to Roly Gonzales, pulling UNC Greensboro within one run, 3-2.
Krause issued his fourth walk of the game to lead off the seventh inning. Jason Price (Sr., Taylorsville, Utah) replaced Krause and didn't fare much better. The Spartans took a 4-3 lead when Clinton McKinney ripped an RBI double and then came around to score on a Greg Feltes single. Price retired the first two batters of the eighth inning, before allowing a walk. That brought Brad DeVore (Fr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) out of the bullpen. DeVore gave up back-to-back singles, the second of which was an RBI off the bat of Greg Matson to put UNCG up 5-3.
The Utes staged a comeback in the top of the ninth. Tummolo and Khoury led off the inning with singles and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, pinch hitter Scott Malone (Jr., Paradise, Calif.) smacked a two-run double to tie the contest at 5-5. But Kemp struck out looking to end the rally.
The Spartans' Adam Deleo led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. An intentional walk and a hit batsmen loaded the bases with one out. Jermaine Mitchell then delivered the game-winning hit, plating Deleo to give UNC Greensboro the 6-5 win.
DeVore (1-1) suffered the loss for Utah. Matson (1-0) picked up the win for the Spartans, despite allowing Utah's two runs in the ninth inning. Khoury was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead the Utes at the plate.
Utah wraps up play at Texas A&M on Monday afternoon, facing Missouri State in a 1 p.m. CST matchup. The Utes topped the Bears 4-1 in their first game of the Aggie Baseball Classic.
