COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The University of Utah baseball team wrapped up play at the Domino's Aggie Baseball Classic with a 6-3 win over Missouri State Monday afternoon. The Utes finished the Classic with a 2-2 mark and now stand at 6-7 overall.
Utah (6-7) ran four different hurlers to the mound on Monday, playing their fourth game in as many days. The four pitchers kept the Utes in the game long enough to get the offense going over the final five innings. As a group, they allowed just three runs on seven hits, while striking out eight and walking five. Chase Christensen (So., Bountiful, Utah) picked up the victory, moving to 1-0 on the season. He allowed just one hit and struck out three Missouri State (2-2) batters.
"We were really picked up by all four of those pitchers today," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "They did a nice job today of keeping us in the game and then holding the lead when we got ahead."
The Bears grabbed a 3-0 lead after four innings. Missouri State scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings. Utah starter Brandon Ast (Jr., Denver, Colo.) allowed a single run in the first and an unearned run in the third inning. Reliever Jason Williams (Jr., Cave Creek, Ariz.) allowed the third run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth.
The Utah bats finally came to life in the top of the fifth. John Welsh (Jr., Salem, Utah) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Erich Kemp (Jr., Hemet, Calif.) then ripped a double to chase Welsh home. Kemp later scored on a squeeze bunt off the bat of T.J. Wise (Jr., Burien, Wash.) to pull Utah within one run, 3-2.
The Utes took the lead in the top of the sixth. Welsh came up with an RBI double with two outs, scoring Jay Brossman (Jr., Pullman, Wash.). Welsh scored to give Utah the eventual game-winning run when Kemp singled, making it 4-3.
The Utes added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. Kemp led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. Adam Frank (Sr., Paul, Idaho) doubled home Kemp and later scored on a Missouri State error to make it 6-3.
"We got just enough offense to win today," Kinneberg said. "But we had a better approach and hit some balls better. Offensively, we're still just not clicking on all cylinders."
Kemp led Utah at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Utah is in action again Thursday-Saturday, playing a three-game series at Southern Utah.
