SAN ANTONIO - University of Utah pitchers Eric King (Jr., Orem, Utah) and Rory James (So., Oshkosh, Wis.) scattered five hits and did not allow an earned run Saturday afternoon at Wolff Municipal Stadium. Utah's bats put double-digit runs on the scoreboard, as the Utes took a 10-1 win over Texas-San Antonio.
Jay Brossman (Jr., Pullman, Wash.) went 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Utes at the plate. John Welsh (Jr., Salem, Utah) also contributed with his bat, going 2-for-4, driving in three runs and scoring one.
"We're getting better," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We looked a lot more comfortable today. We pitched extremely well. King and James combined to do a really nice job. Welsh and Brossman carried us with some RBIs and had some key hits. Plus, we made some great plays on defense."
Utah (2-3) took a 1-0 lead in the second when Joe Mozeleski (Sr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Texas-San Antonio (1-2) tied the contest 1-1 in the bottom of the inning, scoring an unearned run on one hit and one Utah error.
The Utes opened things up in the third. Ryan Khoury (Sr., West Jordan, Utah) reached on an infield hit and later scored on Brossman's run-scoring single to right field. Erich Kemp (Jr., Hemet, Calif.) walked in front of Welsh's two-run double down the left-field line. Welsh later scored on an Adam Frank (Sr., Paul, Idaho) base hit to left. Utah held a 5-1 lead after three innings.
That was more than enough for King and James. King (1-0) picked up the wing, tossing six strong innings. He allowed just four hits and UTSA's unearned run in the second. James held the Roadrunners scoreless over the final three innings, allowing just one hit.
Utah increased its lead in the fifth. Tyler Kmetko (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) singled to lead off the inning. Brossman then deposited his first home run over the left-field wall to make it 7-1. The Utes increased their advantage to 8-1 when Frank drove in Kemp, who walked earlier in the inning.
Khoury and Kmetko each reached on walks in the sixth. Khour later scored on an RBI single off the bat of Kemp, while Welsh drove Kmetko in with a sacrifice fly. The two runs pushed Utah's lead to the final tally of 10-1.
Caleb Barton (0-1) took the loss for Texas-San Antonio. The first of four Roadrunner pitchers allowed seven runs - six earned - in four innings of work.
Utah and UTSA will play the rubber match of their three-game series Sunday afternoon in San Antonio. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. CST.
