SAN ANTONIO - The University of Utah baseball team fell to Texas-San Antonio by a tally of 9-6 Sunday afternoon at Wolff Municipal Stadium. The loss dropped Utah to 2-4 on the season, while Texas-San Antonio improved to 2-2.
The Utes fell behind 5-0 after the first inning. Utah starter Jason Price (Sr., Taylorsville, Utah) allowed to walks to lead off the inning. UTSA's Zach Etheredge then ripped a two-run double. Ryan Saltzberger then knocked Price out of the game with an RBI single. Greg Krause (Fr., Henderson, Nev.) came on in relief. Two more runs came in before Krause was able to get out of the inning. The Roadrunners led 5-0 after one inning.
Utah got on the scoreboard in the second frame. The Utes loaded the bases with one out. Ryan Khoury (Sr., West Jordan, Utah) drove in a pair of runs with a single to left, making it 5-2. Utah tied it up in the top of the fourth. Joe Mozeleski (Sr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) and TJ Wise (Jr., Klamath Falls, Ore.) both walked. Khoury drove Mozeleski in with a single to left. Wise scored when the relay was mishandled. Tyler Kmetko (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) plated Khoury with a single to center, knotting the game at 5-5.
But the tie was short-lived. UTSA scored three in the bottom of the fourth. J.R. Voyles drove in a run with double to left field. Michael McKennon then chased Voyles home with a double to left-center, knocking Krause out of the game. Shad McCord (Sr., Layton, Utah) took over on the mound for Utah. McKennon later scored on a passed ball, giving the Roadrunners an 8-5 lead.
Utah got back within two runs, 8-6, in the sixth inning. Eric King (Jr., Orem, Utah) reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jay Brossman (Jr., Pullman, Wash.). But that's as close as the Utes would get. Utah had only two more baserunners over the final three innings of the contest. Texas-San Antonio added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, accounting for the final tally.
McCord (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season, despite allowing just one earned run in 2.1 innings. Josh Blakely (1-0) tossed two innings of relief for UTSA, allowing just one hit and one unearned run, to pick up the victory.
Khoury led the Utes at the plate. He was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Voyles paced the Roadrunners' offense, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Utah managed just seven hits in the game. All seven of the Utes' hits came from the first five hitters in the lineup. UTSA rapped out 12 hits in the contest.
The Utes are back in action again next weekend. Utah will travel to Davis, Calif. For a three-game series with the UC Davis Aggies. First pitch on Friday is slated for 2 p.m. PST.
