Volleyball Snags Win Over UVSC, 3-1

OREM, Utah - The University of Utah volleyball team passed its last test before Mountain West Conference play began in chalking up 3-1 win over Utah Valley State tonight.
"I thought we played well at times and struggled at times," head coach Beth Launiere said. "But, UVSC deserves credit for that because they came out aggressive. I thought the Wolverines fought hard and competed tonight. We had to come out and play our best to get the win."
Utah improves to 8-3 on the year and bagged the win on scores of 30-24, 30-19, 25-30 and 30-18. The Wolverines slipped to 4-6 overall.
The Utes netted the victory in hitting over .200 for the fourth straight match. They hit .202 over the four games and were led by Shelly Somerfeldt and her match-high 13 kills and her team-best 10 digs. She also hit an impressive .344 in recording only two errors on 32 swings.
Freshman Airial Salvo was the only other double-digit kills leader for Utah. She had 10 on the night.
Shannon Krug ran the attack as she dished out a match-high 40 assists.
Utah held the Wolverines to a meager .065 hitting and led them in blocking as well, 15.5-9. Amie Tingey came off the bench to play the last three games and led the team in blocking with a season-high eight total blocks. Salvo chimed in with six total blocks of her own.
UVSC had three players in double-digit kills, led by Jessica Enders' 12. Also leading the Wolverines were Lacee Koelliker with 40 assists, Stephanie MacFarland with five blocks and Maegan Hoyt with 16 digs.
Utah's title defense begins with its first conference matches this weekend. Utah ventures to the Air Force Academy on Friday, Sept. 23, and New Mexico on Saturday, Sept. 24. Both matches are slated to start at 7 p.m.
