SAN FRANCISCO - Sophomore Kiley Jones scored the only goal of the game in the 96th minute to give Utah a 1-0 overtime win over San Francisco on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
After a fierce battle in which the keepers combined for 15 saves, Jones scored on a breakaway opportunity at the 95:53 mark in the first overtime period.
Melissa Wayman won the ball in the center circle after it was cleared to the midfield area. Wayman then found Jones, who got a one-on-one opportunity after sliding behind the USF defenders. Jones slotted the shot from 15 yards out on the right wing past a charging Dons' keeper Kelly Pohle.
Utah (1-0) outshot San Francisco 16-7. Pohle made eight saves for USF (0-1) before Jones' shot got past her.
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Mason made seven saves for the Utes, playing the entire game. One of her saves was on a penalty kick in the 60th minute. Utah had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. San Francisco committed 17 fouls to Utah's 13.
Freshman forward Adele Letro, getting the start in her first collegiate game, led the Utes with seven shots and fired five of those on goal. Senior forward Kim Lloyd had three shots, while Hailey Marsh had two.
The Utes, ranked No. 26 in the Soccer Buzz Top 30 preseason poll, improved to 3-1 in season openers under head coach Rich Manning.
Utah wraps up its road trip at Boise State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Utes then return home to host UVSC on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
