LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah softball team upped its winning streak to four games with an 8-2 win over Texas Tech at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., this afternoon.
After suffering a rain-out on the tournament's first day, Utah (4-0) got it started by tapping the Red Raider pitching staff for 11 hits in plating its eight runs. Ute bats have chalked up 10-hit games in three of their first four outings.
The Red Raiders fall to 2-4 for the year.
Ivette Hernandez had a spectacular showing at the plate in the day's first game. She was 2-for-4 with four RBI, three of which came off a towering three-run shot in the top of the seventh. Going 2-for-3 on the afternoon were Jackie Wong (with 1 RBI, 2 runs), Diana Phillips (1 run) and Sarah Lyman (1 RBI, 2 runs).
Ute hurler Lindsie Nielsen had a one-hitter through three and two-thirds innings but surrendered four hits in the next three innings, one a solo home run in the fourth. She finished the game scattering seven hits in tallying four strikeouts, no walks and two earned runs.
The Utes put the first two runs on the board in the first inning. Three of the first four batters got on base and thanks to an RBI single by Hernandez and a suicide squeeze by Devina Quintero, Utah had a two-run cushion.
Another three runs in the fourth gave Utah a 5-0 lead. RBI singles by Sarah Lyman and Jackie Wong spotted the Utah with a four-run advantage while Lyman would later tally in the fifth run on a wild pitch.
The Red Raider offense awoke in the fourth when Jennifer Corkin belted a solo shot over right-centerfield. An RBI-single by Kelly Rhyne in the sixth made it 5-2.
Hernandez tallied the final three runs of the game with her three-run home run in the seventh.
The Sunday schedule of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic has been altered so Utah can squeeze two games in. First up is Michgan at 8:30 a.m., and then Texas State at 12:30 p.m.
