SALT LAKE CITY - Melissa Wayman, a junior defender on the Utah women's soccer team, has been named to the All-West Region third team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The NSCAA also honored Utah with its Team Academic Award for the 2004-05 school year.
Wayman helped anchor the Utes' defense that ranked 24th in the NCAA in goals-against average (.707). The West Valley City native also scored three goals and had three assists. A three-year starter, Wayman was honored as the 2005 Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Utah earned the NSCAA's Team Academic Award for the eighth consecutive year with a 3.09 cumulative team grade point average.
The Utes went 14-7-1 in 2005, won the Mountain West Conference regular season championship for the second time in three years, and advanced to their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament under head coach Rich Manning.
