LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Utah capped off its 2005 Mountain West Conference championship season by making a clean sweep of the major awards announced tonight at the MWC's pre-tournament banquet.
Junior forward Amanda Feigt of Utah garnered Offensive Player of the Year honors, while Ute junior defender Melissa Wayman earned the Defensive Player of the Year award. Adele Letro of Utah was selected as Freshman of the Year, and Utah coach Rich Manning collected Coach of the Year accolades for the second time at the helm of the Utes. Utah won its second regular-season women's soccer championship this year.
The league's eight head coaches selected the all-conference first and second teams, as well as the award winners. The soccer championship begins Wednesday at Peter Johann Memorial Field on the UNLV campus.
BYU, Utah and UNLV each placed three players on the all-MWC first team, while San Diego State and Wyoming each had one first-team honoree. Jenna Huff of UNLV was honored as the first-team goalkeeper.
Feigt was tabbed as Offensive Player of the Year after leading Utah to its second conference title and leading the league in goals (5) and points (11) in conference games. She also tied for first for game-winning goals (2). Wayman earned Defensive Player of the Year honors as she led Utah to an unbeaten conference season, which included four shutouts. Wayman anchored the Utah backline that only allowed four goals in conference play. Freshman of the Year honors went to Utah forward Adele Letro, who contributed two goals and two assists in conference play and is the Utes leading scorer with 18 points.
Utah is the No. 1 seed in the MWC Championship, which takes place Wednesday through Saturday at UNLV. The Utes face Air Force in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. (PST).
