SALT LAKE CITY - Erin Pruitt took a cross from Kiley Jones and headed it in from the left side of the frame with 3:47 to play in the second overtime period to give Utah a 1-0 win over instate rival Utah State on Sunday afternoon at Ute Field. The Utes improved to 6-2-1 with the victory, while the Aggies fell to 3-6-0.
A crowd of nearly 800 gathered on gorgeous early fall afternoon to watch the instate rivals square off for the seventh time. The Utes improved to 6-1-0 in the all-time series, but the last three games have been decided by one goal--the last two going to overtime. Typical of a rivalry game, it was a physical affair with the teams combining for 41 fouls, including 23 by Utah.
With time running down and neither team able to mount a serious attack in the second overtime, Utah moved the ball down field with Jones taking it deep down the right side. After defender Ashley Wilson had taken the ball away from Jones initially, Jones crossed the ball in front of the net to Pruitt, who was well positioned on the left side of the net. Pruitt, a senior midfielder from San Dimas, Calif., headed the ball past Aggie keeper Megan Mills for the game-winner and her second goal of the season.
Utah State created some excellent scoring opportunities in the first overtime period, getting corner kicks in the 97th and 98th minutes. Ute keeper Ashley Mason also made two saves on successive headers by Melissa Baggaley and Sierra Smith with just a little over a minute left in the first overtime.
Mason made five saves in the game and did an excellent job of punting the ball. Mason's boomers up two corners for the Utes in the 63rd minute. The Utes had a 16-7 edge in corners over the Aggies.
Mills made five saves for Utah State. In addition to her goal, Pruitt had one other shot on goal. Amanda Feigt, Whitney Dorsey, Hailey Marsh and Julie Herdic also had shots on goal for the Utes.
Utah heads to the West Coast for two games next weekend, taking on UCLA on Friday at 6:00 p.m. (PDT) and San Diego on Sunday at Noon (PDT). The Utes return home to host UNLV on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 3:00 p.m.
