SALT LAKE CITY - Sophomore southpaw Jason Price broke the Utah single-season strikeout record in a losing effort tonight as the Ute baseball team fell 6-4 to San Diego State at Franklin Covey Field. With the loss, Utah falls 21-32 on the year and 11-17 in Mountain West Conference play.
Price scattered eight hits over 6.1 innings, giving up just one run. He struck out five and walked three. He now has 97 strikeouts on the year, surpassing the previous record of 94 set by Mitch Maio in 2002.
Senior Ben Buck (6-3) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on six hits in 1.1 innings. He walked one and struck out one.
After two scoreless innings, San Diego State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI-single. Utah tied it in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by senior Jared Pena.
The Aztec bats came alive in the top of the eighth, as they plated five runs on six hits, including a three-run bomb, to take a 6-1 lead.
The Utes answered in the bottom of the inning when senior Eric Chevalier knocked a two-run long ball over the right field fence. Senior Michael Westfall, Jr., later hit a one-run single for the 6-4 final score.
Chevalier led the Utes at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI, while Westfall was 2-for-4 with one run driven in.
