SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Utah baseball team nearly doubled the Aztecs in hits (15 to 8) and hung on to defeat San Diego State 7-6 in a nail biter at Tony Gwynn Stadium this afternoon. With the win, the Utes improve to 11-23 overall and 4-10 in Mountain West Conference play.
Senior Ben Buck earned the win on the mound, improving to 2-2 on the year. He pitched one inning, giving up one run on two hits, while striking out one. Junior Clay Westmoreland earned the save, his fifth of the season.
Utah's starter, Doug Mackay, pitched four innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking six.
Utah jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when junior Matt Ciaramella hit an RBI-double to center field and senior Jared Pena later hit a long ball over the left field fence, plating two more runs.
The Aztecs got on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo homer to center field, and tied it at three apiece in the fourth.
San Diego State took its first lead, 5-3, in the bottom of the sixth, plating runs on a ground out and a base hit.
The Utes took the lead back in the top of the seventh, when senior Nate Schlieman led off with a single, followed by a double by sophomore Ryan Khoury. Freshman Jay Brossman and Ciaramella then drove in one run apiece on groundouts. After an Eric Chevalier single and stolen base with two outs, Pena knocked a double over the Aztec left fielder's head, scoring the third run and giving Utah a 6-5 lead.
The Aztecs tied it again in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI-single.
Utah went ahead for good in the top of the ninth when Chevalier hit a double to right field, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit by Pena.
Pena led Utah at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one run and four RBI, including the game winner. He was one of six Utes with multi-hit games. Others included Chevalier (3-for-5), Khoury (2-for-4), Schlieman (2-for-4), freshman John Welsh (2-for-4) and Ciaramella (2-for-5).
