SAN DIEGO, Calif. - For the first time all season, the Utah baseball team took two of three games in a Mountain West Conference series, defeating San Diego State 9-4 in the series finale at Tony Gwynn Stadium this afternoon. The Utes, which rattled off 16 hits, improve to 12-23 overall and 5-10 in MWC play.
Senior Ben Buck earned the win on the mound, his second in as many days, to improve to 3-2 on the season. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, while striking out two and walking four.
Senior Clay Westmoreland earned his second save in a row, throwing three perfect innings, giving up no runs on no hits, while striking out three.
San Diego State took an early lead, plating one run in the bottom of the first on a base hit.
Utah put four runs on the board in the top of the third when junior Matt Ciaramella hit a two-run double to center field. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded and no outs, senior Michael Westfall, Jr. hit a single to short center field, plating another run. After the next two batters struck out, catcher Nate Schlieman reached on a base on balls, scoring another run and giving Utah a 4-1 lead.
Utah extended its lead in the top of the fourth when Ciaramella hit another double and was brought home on a Jared Pena base hit. Westfall then hit a double down the left field line. After an Aztec pitching change, freshman John Welsh hit a two-run single to center field, giving Utah a 7-1 lead.
The Aztecs cut away at the Ute lead in the bottom of the sixth, plating two runs on two base hits. With one out and bases loaded, freshman hurler Travis Kohn entered the game and got out of the inning, as San Diego State stranded three runners.
In the top of the seventh, shortstop Ryan Khoury knocked a solo homer to left field, his fifth of the year, to put the Utes up 8-3.
San Diego State led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo long ball to right field. Utah answered in the top of the eighth when senior Eric Chevalier led off with a triple and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Pena, making it a 9-4 ballgame.
Westfall went 4-for-5 at the plate with one run and one driven in, while Khoury was 4-for-6 with two runs and one RBI. Ciaramella went 2-for-5 with two runs and two driven in, while Chevalier was 2-for-5 on the day with two runs scored.
