SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Utah baseball team committed two costly errors that resulted in three unearned runs in a 3-2 loss at San Diego State in the first game of the series tonight. With the loss, the Utes fall to 10-23 overall and 3-10 in Mountain West Conference play.
Sophomore Jason Price (2-6) suffered the loss on the mound. He threw 6.1 innings, giving up three runs, all unearned, on four hits. He struck out seven and walked four.
For the second game in a row, junior Matt Ciaramella knocked a home run in the top of the first inning. In his second at-bat in the top of the third, Ciaramella hit a double deep into center field, plating freshman Jay Brossman and putting Utah up 2-0.
The Aztecs made it a one-run game in the bottom of the fourth when a runner scored after second baseman Jared Pena committed a throwing error in what should have been a double play.
San Diego State took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth, plating two on a two-out, full-count error by Ute first baseman Jake Waldram.
Ciaramella led the Utes at the plate, going 2-for-2 with one run and two RBI. Brossman was 2-for-3 with one run as the only other Ute with a multi-hit game.
