PROVO, Utah - After leading for seven and a half innings, the Utah baseball team gave up four runs in the eighth inning en route to a 4-2 loss at the hands of Utah Valley State College in non-conference action at Larry H. Miller Field this afternoon. With the loss, the Utes fall to 10-22 on the season.
Senior Ben Buck suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 1-2 on the year. He threw 7.2 innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits. He struck out a season-high seven batters and walked none.
Utah jumped ahead in the top of the first on a two-run long ball to right center by junior Matt Ciaramella.
After seven scoreless innings, the Wolverines plated four runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Freshman John Welsh led Utah at the plate, going 2-for-3, while senior Jared Pena went 2-for-4.
