FRESNO, Calif.--The Utah softball team ended its 10-game skid, defeating North Texas 4-0 in extra innings at the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic. The Utes conclude the tourney with a 1-4 record, with all four losses being to top 25 teams.
It was a defensive battle through the first seven innings. Utah's Brianna Gourdin tossed a great game, allowing just two hits. The sophomore also struck out four and walked just one in the contest. North Texas' pitcher Katy Maxey allowed eight hits, but was able to strand six Utes in the game.
Utah did its damage in the bottom of the eighth with two outs. After Jackie Wong reached on a fielder's choice, she advanced to second on a single by Glennis Donnelly before reaching home on another single by Melissa Stahnke. Then it was Donnelly and Stahnke's turn to cross the plate as Ivette Hernandez connected for a three-run bomb to give Utah a 4-0 lead. In the latter of the inning, Gourdin retired the side to preserve the victory.
Up Next: Utah heads to sunny Honolulu, Hawaii, to play in the Hawaii Softball Classic, March 18-21.
