FRESNO, Calif.--It was a scene of deja vu for the Utes as they fell to No. 23 Oregon State, 5-1, in extra innings at the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic on Friday. Utah, which grabbed the lead first today, led OSU before eventually losing to the Beavers in extra innings at the UNLV Softball Classic earlier this season. The Utes, who are now 6-12 on the season, face No. 25 Long Beach State at 3:00 p.m. (PST) to wrap up the day.
An error by the Beavers in the third inning would eventually lead to the first run of the game. It was Utah pitcher Brianna Gourdin who reached on the error. Gourdin would then come out for pinch runner Lauren Field. Field would advance to second on a bunt single by Texie Criddle and to third on a sac bunt by Lynsey Wall. After Jackie Wong reached on a fielder's choice, Field would then score on Glennis Donnelly's sac fly to left field.
Oregon State tied up the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, using a double and single. In extra innings, Utah hurt itself by committing an error to lead off the inning. The boot allowed OSU's Mendoza, who was on second because of the international tie-breaker rule, to score. After OSU loaded the bases, Vanessa Iapala would rip a three-run double to the gap in right center to give the Beavers a 5-1 lead. In the latter of the inning, Monica Hoffman would retire the side to seal the victory for the Beavers.
Gourdin is credited with the loss for Utah after allowing five runs (three earned) in 7.0 innings of work. The sophomore falls to 4-2 on the year. Hoffman (12-5) gets the win for OSU, which is 22-7 on the year.
Leading the Utes at the plate was Ivette Hernandez on a 2-of-3 day. Melissa Stahnke and Criddle were the only other two Utes to get a hit in the loss.
