PALM SPRINGS, Calif.--The Utah softball team used a three-run homer by Devina Quintero and strong pitching from Brianna Gourdin to defeat Coastal Carolina 5-2 at the Palm Springs Tournament on Friday. The Chanticleers had defeated No. 24 Oregon State earlier in the day. The win bumps the Utes to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the tourney. The Utes face No. 12 Tennessee at 10:30 a.m. (PST) and Boston College at 1:00 p.m. (PST) tomorrow.
Melissa Stahnke knocked in Utah's first two runs, one off her first long ball of the year, and Quintero drove in the next three to lead Utah's offense. Stahnke finished the game 2-of-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Lynsey Wall and Jackie Wong also knocked hits and scored runs for the Utes.
Sophomore Brianna Gourdin improved her overall record to a perfect 4-0. Gourdin scattered eight hits in the complete-game effort, while striking out five.
