Utah Baseball Drops Season Opener to Oregon State, 8-6

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Utah baseball team dropped its season opener 8-6 to Oregon State in the first game of the 2004 Coca-Cola Spring Training Classic at Surprise Stadium today.
After three scoreless innings, the Beavers drilled a two-out, two-run inside the park home run to center field after Utah center fielder Matt Ciaramella dove and just missed the ball.
Utah got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single up the middle from designated hitter Tyler Kay to make it a one-run game.
OSU pushed its lead to 5-1 by way of three bases-loaded walks in top of the sixth.
The Utes stormed back with a three-run inning of their own in the bottom of the sixth to cut the OSU lead to 5-4. Shortstop Ryan Khoury led of the inning with a solo homer to left field and third baseman Cort Wilson added a run-scoring single. Utah also plated a run on a double steal.
A two-out, two-run home run from Ciaramella in the bottom of the ninth brought the game to 8-6, but OSU freshman pitcher Dallas Buck closed out the victory to earn the save.
First baseman Mike Westfall (2-for-5) and Wilson (2-for-4) each tabbed multi-hit games for the Utes.
Sophomore left-hander Jason Price suffered the loss on the mound. In five innings, he gave up two runs on five hits while striking out three.
