PROVO, Utah - Carisse Winegar scored in the 36th minute off a corner kick to give Utah a 1-0 win over Wyoming in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Championship on Wednesday afternoon at BYU's South Stadium.
With the win, the fourth-seeded Utes (12-5-2) move on to face regular-season champion and top seeded UNLV (12-3-2) in the semifinals on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The Rebels defeated the Utes 1-0 during the regular season in Salt Lake City.
After dominating the early part of the first half, setting up four corner kicks in the first 18 minutes, the Utes finally scored off their fifth corner. Whitney Dorsey sent in cross from the left side tight to the end line. Winegar, waiting by the right post, collected the ball in front of her and shot it off the right post. The ball then bounced off the back of a Cowgirl defender and into the net for the score. It was Winegar's second goal of the season.
The Utes had a 5-3 advantage in corners and an 8-1 advantage in shots in the first half.
Ute goalkeeper Ashley Mason denied Wyoming on a pair of scoring opportunities with just under 15 minutes to play in the second half. She tipped away a free kick and punched out the ensuing corner kick.
The Utes then had three excellent scoring chances of their own in the 79th and 80th minutes. Amanda Fiegt missed a wide-open shot from high on the left side. Chelsea Card then blasted a shot high off the right post and missed a shot off the cross bar on the following corner kick.
Utah outshot Wyoming (9-7-4) by a 13-5 margin for the game and had a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks. Mason made three saves in goal for the Utes, while her counterpart Ashley Sheppard made four saves for the Cowgirls.
