SALT LAKE CITY - Utah and San Diego State played to a scoreless tie in Mountain West Conference women's soccer on Saturday afternoon at Ute Field.
With the tie to the Aztecs and a 1-0 loss to UNLV on Thursday afternoon, Utah remains winless after two MWC games at 0-1-1. Utah is 7-4-2 overall on the season. San Diego State moved to 3-6-5 overall and 0-0-2 in conference play.
Both teams managed just nine shots in the defensive battle, while the Utes had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Ashley Mason made three saves in goal for the Utes while her counterpart, Sophia Perez, made four stops for SDSU. Utah got its fourth shutout of the season.
Sophomores Michelle Deatherage and McKenzie Joyner both had two shots on goal for the Utes.
Utah fired three of its four shots on goal in the first half. The Utes also had three good scoring chances later in the game that didn't force a save. Joyner just missed freshman forward Chelsea Card, who was open in front of the goal, on a left-to-right cross with 35 minutes to play in the second half. Carisse Winegar got off the first of the Utes' three shots in the first overtime period in the 92nd minute, sending it off the crossbar. Deatherage also fired a hard shot from 20 yards out off the crossbar in the 95th minute.
Mason made one save in both the first and second halves, then punched away an Aztec scoring opportunity in the second overtime. Gina Salinas got off a shot in the 101st minute from straight away that Mason punched out to set up a corner kick. Salinas also got off two more shots in the final overtime period that went high.
Next week, Utah plays at Air Force on Thursday evening and hosts its final nonconference game against UVSC on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
