Last Week
Utah picked-up a pair of wins, defeating Air Force 4-0 in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Thursday night and getting past Utah Valley State College 2-1 on Saturday at Ute Field.
Sophomore Amanda Feigt scored two goals and senior Julie Herdic contributed two assists in the win over Air Force. Freshman Chelsea Card and junior Carisse Winegar also scored goals for the Utes.
Utah outshot the Falcons 21-9, had an overwhelming 12-4 edge in shots on goal and set up four corner kicks. The Utes exploded for a season-high tying four goals. Defensively, the Utes posted their fifth shutout of the season. What made Utah's defensive performance even more impressive was that starting goalkeeper Ashley Mason sat out with the flu. Senior Glennis Donnelly, who hadn't played since Sept. 5, made four saves for her second shutout of the year.
Amanda Sanchez and Kim Lloyd both scored goals, while Utah's defense allowed only three shots on goal in the win over UVSC. Utah dominated the game offensively, outshooting the Wolverines 17-4 and piling up a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Erin Pruitt sent a corner in that Tracy Stratton Garner tipped to Sanchez for the first goal. Pruitt and Garner were honored before the game on Senior Day. Michelle Deatherage assisted on Lloyd's goal. Mason played the first half before being pulled because of lingering flu symptoms. Donnelly allowed one goal while making a save in the second half.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 38-10-7 in his third season at Utah. Last season, Manning was named the 2003 West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. He was also named the U.'s 2003-04 Don Reddish Coach of the Year. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Rich's Remarks
On the state of the Utes: "It was good to get back on the scoreboard and in the win column last weekend. We played with good intensity and energy in both games last weekend, which was very pleasing to see. We are improving in both our defensive cohesiveness and our attacking play. We still have room to get better in our speed of play and concentration, and I'm looking forward to this weekend's road trip to see if we can put it all together."
On playing New Mexico and Wyoming: "The trip to New Mexico and Wyoming will be a great challenge to us. The travel will be physically demanding. And the games will be tightly contested. New Mexico is a terrific defensive team. Kristin Winters is an excellent goalkeeper with loads of experience. Wyoming has had some very positive results this year. They have a dangerous forward in Mercy Adetoye and will be tough to beat at home."
